Martin D. Merry, M.D.

Martin D. Merry, M.D., is a general internist with eight years experience in private practice, who since 1980 has devoted full time to education and consultation in health care quality management and organizational issues. During his active medical staff years he gained recognition for developing effective, physician-directed approaches to both improving patient care quality and responding successfully to the highly structured New York State health care regulatory process. Prior to his transition to education and consultation in health care total quality management, he was serving as Medical Director for Quality Assurance at St. Joseph's Hospital in Elmira, New York, and chairman of the Professional Standards Review Organization of Central New York Hospital Evaluation Committee.

Dr. Merry is presently an Associate Professor of Health Management and Policy at the University of New Hampshire School of Health and Human Services and the author of numerous articles, including articles addressing Total Quality Management in the health care field. He has designed and participated in educational programs for the American Hospital Association, the American College of Physician Executives, the American Group Practices Association, the Veterans Administration, and numerous state and regional professional associations. With educational background gained at Corning Glass Works, 3M Corporation, and GOAL/QPC, Dr. Merry is a recognized communicator and trainer of the current adaptation of total quality management concepts to health care.

In the consulting arena, Dr. Merry has worked with more than 400 health care facilities in 48 states and internationally. Specific assignments have included generic and accreditation-related quality management and medical staff organizational issues, leadership retreats, medico-administrative troubleshooting, and onset educational sessions on all of these issues of health care institutions in transition. He has designed and assisted in the creation of inpatien t and ambulatory quality review systems for hospitals, group practices, and managed care plans. He currently serves as a consultant to the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and as the Medical Staff TQM Trainer and Senior Physician Consultant to Healthcare Quality Improvement Resources, Inc.
